February/March Newsletter

Springing into Action

Hi Everyone!

I and the DC for KC campaign team have been busy connecting with neighbors, supporting community initiatives, and learning from residents across Kansas City. A strong campaign starts with listening, showing up, and building relationships, and February (and early March) gave us many opportunities to do just that.

I’m grateful to everyone who has welcomed conversations about the future of our city and the kind of leadership we want at City Hall.

Here’s a snapshot of what we’ve been up to:

Community & Neighborhood Engagement

  • February 2nd: Attended the 18th & Vine Streetcar Feasibility Meeting to explore options for expanding the streetcar eastward and improving access to this historic district.

  • Introduced myself and connected with residents at the Vineyard Neighborhood Association, Marlborough Neighborhood Association, and Santa Fe Neighborhood Association meetings.

  • Joined the South KC Democrats and Midtown Democrats monthly meetings to hear directly from engaged community members about their priorities.

Supporting Local Businesses & Economic Opportunity

  • February 12th: Participated in Collide Across State Lines, discussing what it takes to build, scale, and sustain Black-owned businesses in a region divided by a state line.

  • February 19th: Attended the Midtown KC Now Luncheon to hear more about the proposed Midtown Costco and what it could mean for the community.

  • February 7th: Connected with supporters at a Meet & Greet at Good Karma Coffee.

Community Service & Mutual Aid

  • February 27: Helped with a 20,000-pound food distribution hosted by Unity Southeast Church to support families across the community.

  • February 15th: Joined State Rep. Wick Thomas and other community members at  Kessler Park Beautification Day to help pick up trash and care for one of our city’s treasured public spaces.

  • February 21: Attended the KC Defender Clothing Distribution to support neighbors in need.

Celebrating Community & Culture

  • February 21: Attended the Uzazi Village Doula Graduation, celebrating new doulas supporting maternal health initiatives in Kansas City.

  • February 23: Joined the UMKC Track & Field Alumni Social.

  • February 26: Went to the Night Shift event at the Nelson-Atkins Museum, which spotlights Kansas City’s creative community.

  • Attended the Black Community Fund Policy Brunch at the Bruce R. Watkins Center that celebrated  resilience, community, and the power of collective impact.

  • Joined the Echoes of KC Roots and Rise Gala, which amplified and and celebrated the stories of Black entrepreneurs, creatives, and community leaders in Kansas City.

  • Supported the Missouri Abortion Fund Fundraiser, a critical effort that provides financial assistance for Missouri residents who cannot afford the full cost of abortion care.

And earlier this month…

On March 3, I had the opportunity to speak and participate in the Collective Power fundraiser for AIRRKC, hosted at The Campground in collaboration with Fetch and Workman’s KC. The event brought together community members committed to supporting the rights and wellbeing of immigrants through community care in Kansas City.

You can check out a clip of my remarks below. Every conversation, event, and introduction helps shape this campaign and strengthens the connections that make our city better.

We Need Your Help – Let’s Build People Power

Grassroots campaigns are powered by people, and we’re working to build a broad network of neighbors who care about the future of Kansas City.

We are looking for volunteers to help grow the campaign and build deeper connections across the city.

We will be hosting canvassing events starting March 29 and continuing throughout April as we begin knocking doors, meeting voters, and sharing our vision for Kansas City.

You can sign up here to join the canvassing team or stay in the loop about other volunteer opportunities: https://forms.gle/cJHe1B8U2yA1XmU49

Even if you can’t volunteer right now, you can still help by:

  • Sharing the campaign with your family and friends

  • Inviting people to our events

  • Follow DC4KC Campaign and spread the word on social media

Our goal is to build people power and meaningful connection across Kansas City, and that starts with all of us working together.

Thank you for being part of this movement.

With gratitude,

DC
